The Imperial Valley Water Authority board has contracted with the Illinois State Water Survey to set up and maintain a network of rain gauge stations and observation well sites. The rain gauge network has been in place since 1992 and the observation well network has been in operation since 1994. It is the strategy of the IVWA board to continue to gather information and work with the Illinois State Water Survey to develop an improved understanding of the groundwater and hydrologic system in the IVWA region. The purpose of the rain gauge and groundwater observation well networks is to collect long-term data to evaluate the impact of groundwater withdrawals during dry periods and the growing season, and the rate at which the aquifer recharges.
